Five years ago, the Empire soldiers murdered Lyss’s father. Now Lyss wants revenge. But in a kingdom where foreign magic is forbidden, her plans go awry in the mountains where she encounters a Rarkyn—an Avian chimera from the otherworld—and accidentally forges a blood-pact with the wretched beast.
From New Zealand's debut author, Nikki Lee, comes an extraordinary tale of magic, monsters, and self-discovery; arriving in 2022 with The Parliament Press. Keep your eyes out for the Goodreads page, out soon!

The Rarkyn's Familiar, by Nikky Lee
"Thou shalt not deal in foreign magic."
It's the Empire's first law of magic. Lyss has seen it, breathed it, smelt it first hand. But knowing won’t keep her safe in the mountains. Knowing won't undo a blood-pact with a rarkyn—an avian chimera from the otherworld—or stop its magic from eating her mind.
Knowing won’t save her.
But Illredus, a city in the heart of the Empire, might—if the rarkyn doesn’t kill her first. Trapped with the less-than-amicable creature at her side, Lyss must navigate mountains, murder and magic to find a cure. And maybe, just maybe, if she and the rarkyn cobble together every scrap of luck, cunning and magic between them, they’ll get to Illredus and break the blood-pact before it consumes them both.
